When you book a photoshoot—whether it’s for your family, a couple’s session, or branding—the question, “What should I wear?” almost always comes up. It’s completely normal! The truth is, clothing makes a huge difference in your final images. Here’s why, plus tips and real examples so you can look and feel your best in front of the camera.
The Power of the Right Outfit: Why It Matters
Your outfit isn’t just about looking “put together”—it tells part of your story. What you wear can:
Set the overall tone of your photos (casual, elegant, playful, modern, timeless)
Affect how connected and “in sync” your group looks
Help you feel more confident (or, if you’re uncomfortable, it can show in the photos)
Compliment the setting and the style of your photographer
Outfits in Action: How They Can Change the Mood
Example 1: Family at the Beach All white clothes against soft sand and blue waves creates a light, airy look and a classic feel. Swap to bright, mismatched neon and the energy instantly feels more playful and bold!
Example 2: Autumn Outdoor Shoot Warm, earthy tones (burnt orange, mustard, olive, creams) blend beautifully with leaves and golden sunlight. The result: images full of seasonal, cozy vibes.
Example 3: Branding Session A neutral palette with pops of your brand colour feels polished and on-brand, while busy patterns or bold graphics might distract from your face and message.
How to Choose What to Wear: Simple Tips
Coordinate—Don’t Match.
Think colours and tones that work well together but aren’t identical. For group shots, pick a palette (for example, soft blues, browns, greys, and whites) so everyone’s unique, but nothing clashes.
Stick to Simple Patterns or Solids.
Loud stripes, logos, or characters can draw the eye away from faces and emotions. Timeless clothing = timeless photos.
Consider the Location and Season.
Earthy colours look great in nature, while lighter colours work well in bright, airy studios. Dress for the weather—comfort shows as much as style! But wearing greens in nature blends you into the background.
Be Yourself—But Tune It Up a Notch.
Pick outfits you feel good in, but maybe add a little extra detail (a scarf, layers, accessories). If you feel confident, it’ll shine through.
Think About Movement.
Floaty skirts and dresses add dreamy motion; jeans and jumpers make for cosy, cuddly family snuggles. Avoid anything too tight or awkward when sitting, kneeling, or playing with kids.
My Personal All Time Favourite
My go-to colours for photoshoots are neutrals—think white, off-white, ecru, ivory, and beige linens. These tones are incredibly versatile, work beautifully with any style, and pop in every location. Plus, they’re timeless, effortless, and always look elegant. Whether it’s a floaty white dress, a crisp shirt, or coordinated separates or with jeans, you really can’t go wrong with neutrals.
Why It’s Worth Planning Ahead
Taking a little time to plan your outfits means you’ll love your images for years to come. The right clothes pull the shot together, help everyone look their best, and keep the focus on what matters: your connections, smiles, and the story you’re telling.
Still Stuck?
Don’t hesitate to ask your photographer for guidance! We often have colour palettes or inspiration boards and can help match your outfit to the setting and session vibe.

Final Thought:
Your outfit doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive—just thoughtfully chosen. When you look back at your photos, you’ll be glad you put in a little extra effort.
