Documentary Photography: What is it?

Let’s be honest—family life is rarely picture-perfect. There are sticky hands, snack crumbs, wild giggles, and the odd meltdown (from kids or grown-ups!). But tucked into all that beautiful chaos are the moments you never want to forget. That’s where documentary photography comes in.

What Is Documentary Photography?
Simply put, it’s about capturing your family just as you are—no forced smiles or stiff poses. It’s the way your toddler tugs at your sleeve, the sleepy morning cuddles, the way you and your partner catch each other’s eye across the breakfast table. It’s the real, everyday stuff that makes your story so special.
Why I Love It (And Why You Will Too)
As a mum myself, I know how quickly time moves. One minute you’re rocking a newborn at 3am, the next you’re chasing a muddy toddler through the garden. The days can feel long, but the years? Blink, and they’re gone.
That’s why I love documentary photography. You don’t have to dress everyone up formal or get them to “behave.” You just get to be together—reading, baking, playing, snuggling—and I’ll quietly capture it all. The mess, the laughter, the love. The moments you’ll want to remember when they’re suddenly too big for your lap.
What a Session Feels Like
Forget the stress of getting everyone to look at the camera. There’s no “say cheese!” or bribing with biscuits (well, unless you want to!). We might start in your favourite room, or outside where your family feels most at home. I’ll guide gently if needed, but mostly, I’ll let you do your thing.

You don’t need to worry about what you look like or whether the house is spotless. The beauty is in the realness—the way your little one clings to your leg, the way you wipe jam from a cheek, the way your family fits together, perfectly imperfect.
Why These Photos Matter
Motherhood is a whirlwind, and so much of it goes unrecorded. Documentary photography is my way of helping you press pause. When you look back, I want you to remember not just what you looked like, but how it felt: the warmth, the mess, the love, the chaos, the quiet in-betweens.

These are the photos that will mean the most years from now—the ones that show your family, your way.
