I AM Child Led: Why My Family Sessions Work This Way

If you're a parent, you already know the drill. You get everyone dressed in something matching, you've got snacks in one hand and a spare outfit in the other for the inevitable incident, and by the time you've wrangled everyone into the car you're already fairly sure today is not the day for perfect photos.

Good news: it doesn't need to be. Because I don't photograph the version of your family that's had a good nap and eaten on schedule. I photograph the real one: snacks, meltdowns, muddy knees and all. And honestly, that's the version worth keeping - all while giving you guidance to get the best out of your session - my sunset family guide for example = an absolute life saver!

What Child-Led Actually Means

Children are naturally curious, playful, and wonderfully unpredictable, and I love that about them rather than fighting against it. So instead of asking your little one to stand still, look at the camera, and give me a nice big smile (we've all tried this, and it rarely ends well), I let them lead. If they want to run wild, explore, jump in muddy puddles, or twirl in the grass, I'm right there cheering them on, not calling them back into line.

That's not to say everyone-smiling-at-the-camera doesn't happen. It can, and if the stars align and that's genuinely what you want, I'll always try and get it for you. But it's not my primary style, and it's not what I'm chasing throughout a session, especially when I'm working with children. I'd rather hand you back ten real, slightly chaotic moments than one perfectly posed one that doesn't actually look like your family on an ordinary Tuesday.

Because honestly? Some of the best moments happen in the in-between: the deep belly laughs, the sudden quiet, the wild burst of energy right before nap time hits. The moments where you stop trying to get "the shot" and just join in with their play instead.

Tailored To Whatever They're Obsessed With Right Now

Every parent knows kids go through phases: this month it's dinosaurs, last month it was diggers, next month it'll be something else entirely. I lean into whatever chapter your child is in right now, because that's what will actually mean something when you look back.

So if that means bringing out the wooden dinosaur so we can all go ROAR together, we

do that. If it means the bubble machine comes out and everyone ends up running through a field playing tag, unapologetically wild and free, even better. It's not about squeezing your family into a formula. It's about noticing what your child genuinely loves at this exact moment, and building the session around it.

A Calm Presence Underneath the Chaos

Child-led doesn't mean chaotic for the sake of it, and it definitely doesn't mean me standing back doing nothing while you try to keep everyone alive.

Underneath the energy, I'm quietly watching for the natural pauses: the moment everyone's a bit out of breath from running and naturally leans in together, hands interlaced, a scraped knee getting kissed better, a tear being wiped away. Those quieter in-between moments, the ones you might not even clock happening at the time, are usually the ones that mean the most once you're looking back at the gallery.

What This Actually Means For You As A Parent

Mostly, it means you get to stop worrying about "getting the kids to behave" for the camera. That job isn't yours on the day. It's mine. Your only job is to show up, exist, and let the chaos happen exactly as it would anyway. I'll work around whatever mood turns up, tantrum or triumph, and find the real moment inside it.

Just an hour or two of your actual life, captured properly, so you've got something honest to look back on, not a stiff portrait that could belong to anyone.
